NO NEWS IS NO NEWS

This has been a fairly calm and “nothing really going on” kind of month. And, since nothing has really managed to reach out and grab my face as a topic, I’m afraid I have to leave you with no main topic this month.

Don’t worry, though! There’s still stuff to talk about. It’s just that they’re in the regular segments. So without further ado… (I heard that cheer, you in the back. How rude!)

WRITING REVISING IN PUBLIC

Revising Best Enemies Forever is slow going.

But it is going.

My AI editor and I have identified several scenes that need to go, including one where I need to find new ways and places to feed the information into the narrative.

We’ve also shored up (hopefully) one of the weaker aspects and turned it from “This character was introduced just to die” to being more of a gut-punch… although not that at all. There is a new, stronger purpose to two of the characters, who are being combined into one character.

And all the while, the story’s central focus (so far) remains completely intact.

Long story not quite so long, this project is looking like it will actually be completed this year!

On the less bright side, new first-draft words have not been happening, as my energy has been on the revision. But that was to be expected, so I’m cutting myself that mythical slack I keep hearing about.

GAMING THINGS

Kalen found something a few weeks ago that has totally changed the way we play one of our semi-regular games.

One of the cool aspects of the Steam client is the Workshop. This is a feature that allows regular schmoes to create custom content for games that allow for it and import that stuff into your Steam game. Examples of this include Cities Skylines, Planet Coaster, Age of Wonders III, and Civilization V. In our group, we have used the workshop to find digital versions of board games we can play on Tabletop Simulator. (Like our Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.)

But what Kalen found… Oh, my…

He found film clip packs for What the Dub.

You may or may not remember, but What the Dub is a game where they show a very short film clip and cut out a piece of dialogue. Then, each player writes in what that missing line might be. Players then vote, not being allowed to vote for their own, and points are scored accordingly.

We love the game right out of the box, but the ability to customize it by adding additional clip packs of movies, shows, and franchises we love… my love for the game has been revitalized. (And Spider-Man has more than one clip pack, which makes me more than one happy.)

So while our workaholic member has been unable to join us for game nights, we have been playing What the Dub (along with others in our rotation) with these new packs.

WRAPPING UP

Sometimes nothing going on is a good thing. I’m calling it that for this month, even though it left me without a main topic for this short post.

I hope that if nothing is going on for you, it’s a good kind of nothing. I also hope that whatever your personal or creative projects, you are making progress. Even a little bit done today is that much closer to making that thing what it’s destined to be. And that is always a good thing.

Talk to you next month.
